The Sketchbook Project
The Sketchbook Project was an independent Brooklyn-based company that organized global, collaborative art projects. They also operated the Brooklyn Art Library, a storefront exhibition space.
The Sketchbook Project began in 2006 in Atlanta, GA and moved to New York City in 2009. It was a worldwide community of artists and non artists creating these wonderful individual sketchbooks.
I had a lot of fun creating these books and am very pleased with the results. I chose to paint in the Sumi-e style and used music that is important to me as the inspiration for the 2014 book. I painted the images on rice paper and then used a collage technique with sumi dyed strips of paper to insert the work into the pages of the sketchbook.
I picked out my music and then listened to the song as I painted an image. Each song was the muse for each painting.
For the 2015 book I again painted in Sumi-e but decided to have the things that were important to me, the moment in time, in 2015 the Year of the Sheep.
Unfortunately the Sketchbook Projerct Library closed in 2023. When I discover where my books are housed now I will post links.
